Wesley Fofana slams Enzo Fernandez & Argentina squad for ‘uninhibited racism’

Wesley Fofana shared a video featuring his Chelsea teammate Enzo Fernandez and the rest of the Argentina squad singing a chant described as ‘racist and discriminatory,’ captioned with ‘Football in 2024: uninhibited racism.’

The footage captures the Argentina team celebrating their Copa America victory over the weekend.

The French Football Federation (FFF) has labeled the chant ‘racist and discriminatory’ and is planning to file a legal complaint against their Argentine counterparts.

A statement from the FFF read: ‘The president of the French Football Federation, Philippe Diallo, strongly condemns the unacceptable racist and discriminatory comments made against the players of the French team as part of a song sung by players and supporters of the Argentine team after their victory in Copa America and broadcast in a video on social networks.

‘Faced with the seriousness of these shocking remarks, contrary to the values of sport and human rights, the president of the FFF decided to directly challenge his Argentine counterpart and FIFA and to file a legal complaint for insulting remarks of a racial and discriminatory nature.’

With Fernandez visibly recording the video and Fofana highlighting it, Chelsea has initiated their own investigation into the matter.

The video was posted on Instagram by Fernandez before being quickly removed.

The contentious chant originated during the 2022 World Cup, where Argentina defeated France in the final in Qatar.

The song targets French players, asserting ‘they are all from Angola’ with ‘Nigerian’ mothers and ‘Cameroonian’ fathers.

Following Argentina’s Copa America final win over Colombia on Sunday, Fernandez is expected to have some time off before rejoining Chelsea for pre-season training.
